About Sambalpur Zoo

The Sambalpur Zoo, officially known as the Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab Zoological Park, is one of Western Odisha’s most beautiful and compact wildlife parks. Located near Motijharan, just 2 km from Sambalpur city centre, the zoo is surrounded by lush sal forests and small hillocks — making it a calm and refreshing green retreat for nature and animal lovers alike.

Established in 1980, the zoo covers nearly 35 hectares and houses an impressive variety of fauna and flora native to the region. The park focuses on education, conservation, and recreation, featuring attractive animal enclosures, the Aqua House, and the popular Nocturnal House.

1. Aqua House

The Aqua House is one of the most visited sections of the zoo, showcasing a range of freshwater fish species from the Mahanadi River basin and other aquatic ecosystems. With colorful tanks and informative displays, it offers both education and entertainment to children and adults.

2. Nocturnal House

3. Animal Enclosures and Species Diversity

The zoo is home to a diverse range of species — including leopards, sloth bears, black bucks, sambar deer, barking deer, and four-horned antelopes (chowsingha). Bird lovers can spot peacocks, parakeets, egrets, and pigeons in beautifully landscaped aviaries.

The Black Buck is one of India’s most graceful antelopes, recognized by its striking spiral horns and contrasting coat color. Adult males display a dark brown to black upper body and white underparts, while females and young remain fawn-colored. Known for their incredible speed and elegance, black bucks inhabit grasslands and open plains. Once widespread, they are now protected under the Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. At Sambalpur Zoo, they can be seen leaping gracefully in open enclosures, symbolizing agility and beauty in motion.

Chowsingha (Four-Horned Antelope)

The Chousingha, or Four-Horned Antelope, is a rare and unique species found mainly in the dry deciduous forests of India. True to its name, it is the only antelope in the world with four horns — a distinctive feature that makes it a zoological marvel. At Sambalpur Zoo, the chousinghas are kept in semi-natural habitats that mimic the hilly woodlands of Western Odisha. Their calm demeanor and alert stance reflect the harmony between grace and survival in the Indian wilderness.
