The temple is dedicated to the fierce form of Goddess Durga, worshipped as the protector of river voyagers. In ancient times, before the construction of the Hirakud Dam, the strong river currents made this region perilous for boats. The sound of countless bells served as a navigational guide — warning sailors of the dangerous whirlpools. Hence, the temple became both a spiritual and practical beacon of safety.
